Contextual safeguarding recognises that children and young people can experience harm outside of their home and family environment. These risks may occur within peer groups, schools, neighbourhoods, the wider community or online, and can include exploitation, grooming, abuse, criminal activity and violence.
Children and young people may not always recognise when they are at risk, and parents and carers may be unaware of the situations or influences affecting their child outside the home.
At The Rowans AP Academy, we understand the importance of considering the wider circumstances and relationships that may impact a young person’s safety and wellbeing. We work closely with Medway Children’s Social Care, local safeguarding partners and other agencies to identify emerging risks, share information appropriately and ensure that children and families receive the right support.
Our approach is centred on early identification, effective intervention and strong partnership working to help keep our pupils safe both in school, at home, online and within the wider community.
