At Key Stage 4, the BTEC Travel and Tourism course provides students with an engaging introduction to one of the world’s fastest-growing industries. Learners are given the opportunity to develop skills by exploring key areas such as customer service, marketing, travel destinations, and the role of different organisations within the sector. The course combines classroom learning with real-world case studies to help students understand how the industry operates. The qualification is made up of four engaging units that build knowledge, confidence and employability skills.

Unit 1: The UK Travel and Tourism Sector (Exam Unit)
Pupils explore the structure of the UK travel and tourism industry, its key organisations and the economic importance of the sector. This unit gives learners a strong foundation in how the industry operates and the roles available within it.

Unit 2: Travel and Tourism Destinations
Learners investigate a range of UK and global destinations, developing map-reading skills, geographical understanding and knowledge of why places attract visitors. This unit broadens pupils’ awareness of the world and strengthens research and presentation skills.

Unit 3: The Travel and Tourism Customer Experience
Pupils learn how to meet customer expectations, provide excellent service and understand different customer needs. This unit is particularly valuable in developing communication, problem-solving and teamwork skills—key strengths for any future employment.

Unit 4: International Travel and Tourism Destinations
Learners explore important international destinations, cultural influences and global travel patterns. This unit encourages curiosity about the wider world and strengthens pupils’ ability to compare, analyse and present detailed information.

Progression Beyond KS4
Studying BTEC Travel and Tourism at KS4 prepares pupils exceptionally well for post-16 pathways. The course develops practical skills, sector knowledge and real-world understanding that colleges and employers value. Pupils can progress to Level 2 or Level 3 Travel and Tourism qualifications, related college courses, or apply for apprenticeships in areas such as hospitality, customer service, aviation, events, or tourism services. The combination of vocational learning and employability skills ensures that learners leave KS4 confident, workplace-ready and equipped for a successful future within a wide range of people-focused industries.
